What's the Better eBook Reader - Kindle or iPad?
If you're a book lover, you've probably been wondering if it's
time to upgrade to something electronic as a way to enjoy your
books -
and if you do upgrade, should it be an iPad or an eBook reader
like The Kindle 3 from Amazon .
We'll walk you through the positive and negative features of
each of these devices and then, hopefully,
you'll be able to decide which one will work for you. Expense
For most people, cost is the biggest issue, so we'll begin
there. An Apple iPad Tablet
is typically priced at over $600 while most
eBook
readers are just under $200; if all you want is a way to read
books, then iPad is probably not the best option despite its
cool
look and super popularity. Of the eBook readers, Kindle is
probably about the best choice - it's price has recently dropped
below $200
and it comes with the full support of Amazon.com, so you have
access to a vast library of eBooks which can all be downloaded
quickly
and easily. Another cost concern with the iPad is the monthly
plan that Apple requires you to have in order to enjoy service;
with Kindle,
there are no additional costs beyond the reader and the price of
the books you want to download. The Viewing Screen
iPad has the bigger screen, with a screen size of 9.7 inches, as
opposed to the 6 inches that you'll find on the older Kindle
models and
most Sony Touch models, though the new Kindle DX is comparable
to the iPad.
Despite its smaller size, the Kindle screen does
have
better resolution - a pixel density of 167 to iPad's 132. The
screens on the traditional eBook readers are also easier on the
eyes, thanks
to e-ink technology and some serious glare reduction, so you'll
be able to keep reading for a longer period. The iPad doesn't
have much
in the way of glare reduction, so it can be very difficult to
read in bright conditions, like outside on a sunny day. Of
course, the iPad wasn't
designed to be just an e-reader, and it's screen was designed to
accommodate all the different functions it must perform. Variety
of Features
This is one where iPad clearly dominates, as there are plenty of
features and apps available besides the reader; it's basically
just an iPhone without the phone. It's very much like a laptop
in some respects - you can watch a movie, edit a document,
check your e-mail or play a game. If all you want is a good
eBook reader, then go with the Amazon Kindle - these are
remarkably
easy to use, have a low price and a huge library of books to
choose from. If you want something that will impress your
coworkers and
entertain you in other ways, then you'll probably want to pay
the big bucks for the iPad.
